Holiday Season Hazards to Avoid

The holiday season is synonymous with family, good food and presents.  We rarely think about what could go wrong until it is too late, here are some tips on how to avoid some of the most common Holidays hazards.

Cooking is the leading cause of residential fires in the U.S., according to the National Fire Protection Association, the average home fire claim costs $34,306, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Pay close attention whenever you’re roasting that turkey or baking pies as you wouldn’t want any of it catching fire.

Other fire hazards involve fire places, space heaters, candles and Christmas lights. Be sure to clean your chimney, the buildup can cause a fire, keep space heaters on level surfaces, don’t leave candles unattended and away from flammable objects, lastly don’t overload Christmas lights outlets and dispose of frayed strands.

Moreover, petty crime tends to increase during the holiday season, there are a few ways to take precaution and protect yourself from falling victim this season, items getting stolen from front porches and cars are the most common, make sure to lock valuables in your trunk, don’t leave any of it in sight. Try to schedule deliveries for when you are home or have it delivered to an Amazon lockbox for a later pick up. Invest in a front door camera and a centrally monitored security system, not only will you feel more protected but also you will be entitled to a protective device credit on your homeowner insurance policy.

Try to follow these tips and reduce your chances of filing a claim during this holiday season, you’ll have more time to focus on the more enjoyable parts of the holidays.
